#1 Sarasota!

My Wife and I had Great Time at Showfolks Gathering yesterday!
Had I known we were going to be Introduced and Given an Award I would have worn my best tie without the Gravy Stains!

This hotel which should have

been saved due to it gaining

an historic preservation title

was originally built as either

the El Verona or Vernona before

John Ringling bought it but

sadly it was torn down to make

room for the Ritz Carlton

The El Vernona was designed by

famed architect Dwight J Baum

& built by developer Owen Burns

Completed in 1926 it was named

in honor of Burns' wife Vernona

Burns sold it to John Ringling

in 1930 who then renamed it

the John Ringling Hotel later

renamed Ringling Towers Hotel

It was demolished in 1998

Thankfully, I visited this grand old place, and made a point of having a round in the fabled M'Toto Room. What a tragedy the locals tore down this piece of their history when John Ringling moved his empire to this sleepy fishing village and awakened Sarasota to world notice.

I was on a waiting list to rent

an apartment in "The Towers"

between marriages but the joint

was condemned & everyone had to

get out before my name came up

There were several attempts to

save it with many fund raisers

but somehow the moneies always

disappeared between events
