Louis Malle & Candice Bergen

with the Empress of everything

People of a certain age remember the massive hit Edgar Bergen was as a radio ventriloquist. He was Candice's father. All the network geniuses said a vent performer and his dummies could only make it as a stage act, since a radio audience could never relate. Bergen's three main characters were the wise-cracking Charlie McCarthy, the slow-witted bumpkin Mortimer Snerd, and the almost off-color old lady, Effie Klinker. They starred on the Chase and Sanborn Hour, co-starred in films with W.C. Fields, and had extensive merchandising with dolls and comic books. Candice wryly noted that her brothers and sister were 3 wooden dummies who lived folded up in suitcases.

For you latter-day readers, Chase and Sanborn was a brand of coffee.

Hills Bros, Chase & Sanborn and the Heavenly coffee (Chock full o'nuts) are marketed by an off shore owner still. The coffee shops closed along time ago in N.Y.

To show you how times have changed, Chock Full O Nuts coffee now carries a disclaimer on the label "Does Not Contain Nuts".

By the way, Chock Full O Nuts was once a sponsor of Big Apple Circus...a classic combination, since both were New York City institutions.

Yeah, Don, but the circus troupe was Chock Full O Nuts!

The late great Jackie Robinson had a titled position with Chock Full O' Nuts. Years and years ago there was a very popular CFON right across the Street from 120 Broadway in NYC. It has been a park for years now. Thus endeth my trivia for today, other than to say I can remember Buckles taking one of his elephants to a bagel shop for a publicity stunt.
