#13 Sarasota!

!n 1948 shortly after WW2  Mr. North purchased a 5 Elephant Act from the remains of the Hagenbeck Zoo including their trainer Hugo Schmitt as seen here with "Minyak" shortly after arrival.
Years later when I showed him this picture he said that after each baton she would lower her trunk and smack them under her chin to even them up!

This was an extraordinary trick. I didn't see Hugo Schmitt do it, but did see it years later in a Russian version in a Moscow Circus show in Paris. Sure enough the elephant "evened the up under her chin."
