Funny to have the bass drum
up front & center unless it's
for a bass drum solo (joke)
I think it makes good sense. Up front, the snare and bass drummer can follow the acts and insert/terminate rolls and accents to match what the performers are doing. I've seen the same arrangement in a movie of the Cole Bros. Clyde Beatty show in the 40s or 50s.
I believe this may be 1942. The show used those stars on many of the midway decorations - -to give a patriotic flair in that the first full war year. Note that the band stand is between the two performance entrances to the big top. They set it up that way when they went to the 4-pole big top.
However, if it is 1942 then it must have been very early in the tented season because the Evans band, pursuant to the order of union boss James Petrillo, went on strike for the rest of the tour. The show used canned music in place of the live band.
I saw the show in Atlanta in October '42, and there was what looked like a big juke box in place of where the band usually sat.
