The band guys worked far harder than many realize. Here, Merle Evans fronts a pre-show concert in Center Ring, to a come-in looking a little sparse. In full uniforms, buttoned up to the neck, they played a full chart, then marched to the bandstand to play a two-hour and twenty-minute performance, twice a day. They met some rough demands, the worst of these in the long, hot summer route.
When I was a small boy I recall seeing the band leaving the ring after the concert.I recall band members picking up the chairs. This was either in 1938 (Barnes-SF with RBBB attractions) or RBBB in 1939. I believe they did away with the pre-show center ring concert about 1939.
I was with my dad and we spent most of our time before the show studying the menagerie.
They also played either daily or weekly concerts in Sarasota during the off-season. Charlie Stevenson showed me one of the programs from a Sarasota concert once. They probably enjoyed playing different charts after a tour.
