Merle Evans, Up C in his white uniform, told us there was an intense discussion every winter in Sarasota over where the bandstand would go the next year. He disdained having the band down by the blues, as he too easily lost track of the acts in Ring One, and had to hope they were working to his chart. He wanted his domain permanently established directly behind Center Ring, where he could better see the acts work and play to their cues. He pled his case every winter, but was perennially denied. The management wanted that section for sale as prime short side seating, so the bandstand danced around in awkward spots much to Merle's dismay. No one liked having the band split into 2 sections, across an aisle, and in front of an entire tier of ticket holders, as we see here.
