For this cagehand, the Beatty show was lost when his name was painted over after remaining for 38 years following his death. Clyde, Jr. was at his surfboard shaping plant, in Santa Barbara, that late afternoon in 2002, and took my call, thinking it was Johnny Pugh renewing the agreement on the name, but when Johnny's call did come, renewal was not to be.
