This might be that damned
old DC Armory (no blackouts
for any matinees)
Likely not very long before
Tommy's broken left ivory
Mary (Mrs. Hubert) Castle hated black for circus wardrobe, but as I stood with her one show in Ft. Wayne, she openly admired the fine appearance Lee Keener cut in this outfit.
For several of the early Feld years
Irvin wouldn't allow black used in
any prop or costume design much to
the annoyance of Don Foote until I
took a chance on painting the gear
& undersides of the Happiness Train
BLACK & Don said I'd never get away
with it As it then happened Irvin
very reluctantly came to understand
that the contrast & the hiding power
was worth allowing it (Don thanked me)
Over the next many years black worked
as we all came to see
