All his radio and TV shows ended with this signature closing. Interviewers tried for decades to get him to reveal who Mrs. Calabash was, but he smiled and kept his secret. Insiders thought she was a real person, but even they never knew exactly what the story was.

Durante made a string of films, many with Donald O'Connor, and we remember him in JUMBO. When you find his clips on YouTube, you will appreciate what a great old-time star he truly was. Look for Jimmy singing his circus song. His TV show closed with him on a darkened stage, walking into three spots, waving good-bye.

Ohhh, thanks Karl S. I was too embarrassed to admit I just didn't understand how the 'Mrs. Calabash' quote applied. Your Durante quote makes sense, now I don't feel so much like my comprehension is in jeopardy!
