I often heard this was the most dangerous job on the show.
That poler is subject to being swept off the runs should it jack-knife!

Saw it happen on the old World of Mirth Shows once. Fortunately the poler didn`t go all the way off the flat car and landed on the gunnel. He did get a bloody nose and a cut to the face though.

On a scale only barely reduced, we got a dose of poling when letting Hoover's cages down his runs on the back of 78, on the Beatty show. Each was allowed down being checked by a cable, which provided some safety, but poling is poling whatever wagon is coming down.
