This one is notable for the photo of James Stewart. Throughout the movie, he was seen only in clown makeup--until Henry Wilcoxin came aboard as the cop who showed snaps of the doctor he was chasing, who had euthanized his wife. DeMille and his writers provided two close-ups of these photos with Stewart's face, to remind the audience he was in the movie, and to shore up the actor's ego.
Stewart had campaigned for a role in GSOE, writing to DeMille that he wanted to play a clown. His part as Buttons was developed into an ongoing theme for the story, and Stewart loved recounting his time on the circus as a career highlight.
