In THE BIG TOP, Fred Bradna describes the evolution of Lou Jacobs' midget auto. He credits George Wallenda, that family's mechanical genius, with installing a washing machine motor, in 1944, and assisting throughout many trials and errors until the car was a Center Ring solo success, in 1948. As we all know, DeMille used the entire act in GSOE.

Lou told me that during the early stages of building the car it was made of cardboard and plywood as Lou figured out how to squeeze himself into a smaller and smaller version until they ended up with the current size. When he first introduced the gag the car would breakdown and Bob Dover would end up pushing it out of the ring.
