Roy L. Jennier from the Washington Zoo’s staff with a black Sumatran gibbon. (In the blog archives can be found Col. Herriott’s comments about Roy’s brother Walter, who was in the circus business.) The caption for this photo, which appeared in the June 1938 issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, pointed out that, “even experienced handlers of animals do get bitten or clawed.”
Thanks Eric. I vaguely recalled this photo and thought this was Walter Jennier's brother. Walter had sea lion acts. The primate would now probably be called a siamang. They're a large member of the gibbon family best known for their loud "woop - woop" calls in the AM.
