For newcomers, this formation is called a picture trick. Uniforms like Mabel's here, and Louis Roth's above, came from DeMoulin Bros., a company still very much in operation, in Greenville, Illinois. For the eagle-eyed, note that Mabel's whip is not of the twisted whipstock style. Her stock was a stout hickory stick, with a very rough-hewn lash, not as cleanly hand-lasted as those Clyde Beatty learned to cut. After being torn up by Nellie tigress in '35, in Phoenix, Mabel could no longer swing a whip, and this one was retired to the trunk that much later came to me.
