When the zoo people installed moats, it was to provide more open viewing for the public, eliminating imposing barriers, such as bars and heavy glass. Then we look at how many such rescues are depicted when animals have to be extracted from moats at great risk to animals and responders alike. Whether or not falls into moats caused threatening or fatal injuries, some animals died from the stress of being rescued. At the expense of better viewing, moats have established lasting peril.
