Ned started on the prop crew in 1968 and Tommy Clark (prop boss) referred Ned to Hoover later that year. Ned was Hoover's head cage man for 16 years. I got to know Ned in the winter of 1979-1980, since Hoover moved to Deland and was no longer living and/or "wintering" in Hialeah. Ned & I got married on October 4, 1980 (Dennis Walker was his Best Man)and we went to work for Robert Baudy that winter in Centerville, FL while the Beatty Show did the infamous "Winter Dates." We returned to the Beatty Show the following February (1981)and Johnny Pugh reluctantly HIRED A GIRL (sound familiar, Buckles???) for Hoover's act, so the 1981 season was Ned, Roger Smith and me, with a few hands that came & went. Ned & I lived in the sleeper of #78 for two seasons (until Pat Anthony "convinced" Hoover to get us a camper!). The second year in addition to shoveling shit, maintaining the cats and loading the truck I became a "showgirl" and did the swinging ladder aerial act! In 1982 Ned became the show's prop boss and 1983 an assistant manager. Pregnant, I went into the Ticket Wagon selling tickets in 1983 doing payroll and what ever else Johnny Pugh, Willie Storey and Harry Hammond need me to do! Preferring the prop "end" more Ned returned as prop boss in 1984 until the end of the 1987 season, when his health had taken a toll due to adult onset diabetes. That was our last season on the Beatty Show. In 1996 I returned to the show as Marketing Director when one of the advance director's was tragically killed in a pre-season accident. I remained on the show for two more seasons. My daughter, then in Middle School was able to join me each June and spend the summer on the road..."again!"
Thanks for bringing back G-R-E-A-T memories!!!

P.S. I have a "few" Hoover stories, too! My favorite one is...
...I was doing the front door of the act for a few days. Lois had to go out of town. We were playing on a grassy field somewhere in the middle of BFE. Hoover often used plywood staging on uneven ground. After the cats were run through the chute into the arena, he moved a stand for John-John (lion) to do a center sit-up. WELL, one of those huge banana spiders scurried across the staging. Hoover turned absolutely white, and froze in place!!! Once he gained his composure he looked over to me (surrounded by 15 lions and tigers) and said "I'M SCARED OF SPIDERS!!!"
WE FOLLOWED DAUGHTER, SON-IN-LAW AND GRANDCHILDREN TO TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA NEARLY 6 YEARS AGO (TO BE PRECISE, 23 DAYS BEFORE THE TORNADO...WELCOME TO ALABAMA!) IT'S BEEN QUITE A "SOCIAL" ADJUSTMENT HAVING CALLED CENTRAL FLORIDA (ORLANDO/DELAND) "HOME" FOR THE BETTER PART OF MY GYPSY LIFE! THRU A STRANGE TURN OF EVENTS, I HAVE LANDED AT EASTER SEALS WEST ALABAMA AND TEACH EMPLOYMENT TRAINING TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH VARIOUS DISABILITIES. IT KEEPS ME OUT OF TROUBLE AND I REALLY LIKE THE 9-5 SCHEDULE WITH THE WEEKENDS OFF!!! NED HAS BEEN RETIRED FOR SEVERAL YEARS, AND COMPLETELY SPOILS OUR THREE GRANDKIDS!!!

Dave Hoover in the 70s
Eddie Firlein & Dennis Walker
were with him for a while
Eddie became the 24 hour man
& Dennis took over the front
end grease joint/ candy wagon
He married Elba of Rita & Elba
& they had a son shortly before
Dennis came down with a nervous
disorder that ultimately took him
When did Ned start with him
Cindy & when did you join
I lied once again (sorry)
Blue stripes both canvas
& vinyl were the 80s
My favorite Dave quote
as an answer to some
hotshot fan questioning
his careful approach to
the cats was "They're
Not Going To Eat Me"
& they didn't after all
I wonder who inherited
Dave's cigar stubb
My favorite Dave Hoover quote (which I have, admittedly, borrowed more than once):
"Anybody who works big cats and says they're never afraid is either a fool or a liar."
Or both Patricia
Greetings, all!
