I felt so fortunate in my youth to be able to hang out with legendary show folks like Pat and Gee Gee.

There is a superb interview with Gee Gee, titled GEE GEE ENGESSER #1 RAW, by Vimeo. It runs 31:20. I found it via Google, but if there is a #2, as I thought was suggested, I'm not turning it up. Vimeo does give us this one, but then you're expected to buy a membership, the cheapest level starting at $60.

Most readers know the story, but it's worth a re-hash. Pat returned as a veteran paratrooper from WWII, and of course was eligible for the GI Bill--which allowed veterans a small stipend toward learning a stateside trade. Pat put in for wild animal training, and Washington, DC, laughed at him. His Congressman from Cleveland got him the bill, and Pat got on at World Jungle Compound, later Jungleland, out here in Thousand Oaks. He learned under John C. "Chubby" Guilfoyle, the second teacher of Clyde Beatty. Benny Bennett, my great mentor, said, "Old Chubby was awfully hard on Pat, but by God, he came out of it a master trainer as you can see." During this breaking-in time, there was no salary from the Compound. Pat survived on veteran's benefits of $80 a month.

Jewel New and I used to go visit Pat at his compound on Jewels day off sometimes. I had to always go in and clean up the cats then go..
