This is the Mississinewa River, in which as we see, the elephant men loved to bring their charges to frolic. The sister river at Peru is the Wabash. In March of 1913, both rivers severely flooded from March 23rd to the 28th, bringing severe and lasting damage to Winterquarters, and throughout the City of Peru. Several histories are available on the losses, including the many animals of the show, which was in the barn at the time. It wasn't until 1969 that the Army Corps of Engineers set in flood controls, beginning with the Wabash.
