In my early years working cats, there was a time at the Cen-Tex Zoo, in Waco. They got a deal on a very young elephant up in Dallas. This photo is similar to what was done then. The dealers, whoever they were, tied the youngster down on a bare, open flatbed, chained her in place, and made the 100-mile jump into Waco in winter conditions. Upon arrival, she couldn't get up and could barely breathe. Vets in Waco had no idea about elephants. Smokey Jones was at Six Flags, in Arlington, at the time, and an emergency call brought him down. All he could do by then was tell the zoo people they had a dead elephant. She expired due to severe exposure and unspeakable ignorance. I hope Tusko being transported this way fared much better.
