#9 Sells-Floto

I have run this picture several times before.
Newcomers will notice the elephants lined up for Parade are bearing banners that
indicate their names, ages, etc.

The elephant in the middle with large tusks is Floto and was in must and tore up a lot of Orange,Texas plus some of the circus too.
The man that shot him with his 30 30 rifle, I got to meet later in life and gave me a piece of Floto's tusk for my collection.
He sawed off the tusk and put them in First national bank in Orange, Tx and Zack Terrell came back to get them and did not succeed.

I grew up in Philadelphia and every spring the Super Fine auto dealership in the Fern Rock neighborhood would host several elephants on their lot, wearing advertising blankets and offering rides to the kids of potential customers. This photo reminds me of that experience and my first contact with an elephant.

New readers may also notice the white-banded caps above sharp uniforms for the elephant men. The descriptive banners are a fine display I've never seen elsewhere. Sells-Floto was a revered old title, sadly done in by the Great Depression. As we all recall, the title had one last grand tour, combined with Al. G. Barnes for 1938. Then, as two magnificent circus titles, neither came out of the barn again. Sells-Floto as a name is being kept legally alive in a lesser role, but Barnes is no longer heard of.
