This is Mabel Stark, performing the rear-and-layback on the stallion Black Knight, as captioned in her personal albums. This style of hat shows up in similar photos of her, as well. In her First of May season of 1911, she was a Generally Useful showgirl, and at once assigned a five-goat act. The goats butted her out of the barn, and she fell off her horses. But Robert Thornton brought her along, and she opened well-schooled. By the end of that year, she had shined up to Louis Roth and got around the tigers she joined out for. Her horse skills surfaced again when John Ringling eliminated cat acts from 1925 through 1927. In '28, she was restored to tigers, this time on John Robinson.
