#16 Big Apple

Interesting story behind this picture!
We were showing out in Long Island while the Ringling Show was in  the Garden when one day Tim Holst shows up with this lady.
Seems they had just concluded a deal to bring in acts from Communist China, a big deal at the time and this Lady Commisar asked if she could have her picture taken with an elephant.
Surprisingly Axel said No!

I'm on Axel's side. We welcomed communist regime performers into Jungleland, when they defected from the Polish contingent on the '67 Ringling show--Klaudiusz Blaszak and Adela (later Ada) Smieja. We opened our showfolks inclinations to take them in, make them feel welcome, and above all, protected, and regretted it overnight, being met with their smug arrogance, cold faces, and pointed disregard for all our trainers and performers. Klaus, as he was called, openly demonstrated disdain for America and all things American. We knew such attitudes were rampant on the Ringling show, but that we didn't care about. Having it shown to us, we who provided them refuge, made us rue the day we ever opened our gate to them.
