Johnny Agee later worked as a horse trainer for Gene Autry. (Some of the horses that Tom Mix used ended up being used by Gene Autry, including the original “Champion.” Johnny Agee was also the Equestrian Director for the very first performance of the combined Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. (Fred Bradna was ill at the time. As soon as he recovered, however, Agee was demoted to his assistant and I believe he left the show shortly thereafter.)

Earlier I mentioned the late historian Leonard Farley. He told me it is not possible to overstate the magnitude of Tom Mix's stardom. His early silent pictures captivated the world, and Mix was turning them out by the week. He was never in danger of overexposure when the boys and girls could never get enough of him. We might relate his impact with that of Elvis Presley in another genre and a later time. As Leonard enjoyed remembering, "For a nickel, we could go see a double-bill starring Tom Mix, and it meant God was in His heaven, and all was right with the world."
