This would have been taken in San Diego, when the elephants and lead stock were still being unloaded down at the Santa Fe siding in Old Town. (Is this the 1978 Blue Unit animal walk?) That siding is no longer there and the unloading now takes place further south. If this IS the 1978 Blue Unit animal walk, than the woman on the last elephant is Jeri Hazlett, the wife of Bart Hazlett who contracted the local musicians for Ringling beginning back in 1957. Jeri had always wanted to ride an elephant, and she finally got her opportunity in 1978. (She rode Mutu.) Later, she received a certificate that she had ridden an elephant during the animal walk and it was one of her proudest possession. She and Bart were originally from Texas and after Bart passed away, I believe she moved back there.
Oh, I remember Billy Bouthellier! While in San Pedro, Ca. on Circus Vargas he came to visit. Ben,myself,Billy, and Hungry Jack all went sailing for a couple hours with Ben at the helm. Oh my God, we get out there where the water is rough and Billy grabs my arm with a death grip saying he can not swim. I would have had to knock him out to save the both of us. He was so frightened it caused me to be very concerned. Ben and Hungry Jack laughed the whole time. Ben's hat blew off and of course, we had to sail around in a tight circle to get it. We had fun alright. I guess Billy did too once he was landed. Hungry Jack worked for us at one time and was/is a sailor. We never saw Bill again.
I remember Billy!!! I worked with him on the crew in 1974 at Circus World! Kinda kooky, but a GOOD guy! Last time I saw him, he was visiting Logan on the Beatty Show circa 1985 in Fishkill, New York and we had a chance briefly, to cut up jackpots! :-) Cindy Potter
