My father went to the Cole Show late in 1944 as Arky Scott's Assistant on Elephants and the next year my mother joined him, I spent 1945 with my Aunt Nellie in Ottumwa, Iowa since no one was allowed to eat in the Cook House unless employed. However I was a pretty big kid and the next year at age 11 and worked on Concessions the next two years for Herbert "Iowa" Farrington who paid me $3 a day plus $2 from Zoot Suit O' Connell for helping on his Novelty Stand. |

Wow! Three dollars a day from Iowa...!!! That is a surprise. Herbert carried a notebook in his pocket and marked down every cent he spent. He was the purchasing agent on the Cristiani Wallace show. He had pierced ears. This is unconfirmed but the legend was he went withna show to China and it went busted and to stay alive and get back to the coast to catch a boat home he pierced his ears and hung bags of peanuts from them. He would go to the markets and shake his head to sell the peanuts to get enough to survive on. Hell of a butcher Herbert.
