Do you have any information on what the cookhouse would of served to the
workers and performers and all of the staff during the years Ringling Bros and
Barnum and Bailey circus was still under the big top? I.E Breakfast, lunch and
supper? Andrew Wightman "Despite being raised on Circus Cook food I can't remember any specific meals except on the 4th of July. And like in the Army, if you asked, "What is this?" You got.....Do I look like I got time to sit around making up names for things?.....however I must say at age 8I, I sleep like a log then up every morning at 4 to administer Wise Counsel on the Blog!" Can never beat SOS!
And you do an EXCELLENT JOB! REMEMBER, Mon. Sonny's BBQ 12:00 NOON!
ANDREW: Your quest for this history is covered many times in the fan magazines WHITE TOPS and BANDWAGON. Look in their indexes, and expect some intensive work to acquire the articles. One multi-part chronicle of the old Cookhouses was authored by John Staley, one of the top stewards of the Golden Age.
Up at 4, hell, only for a move out alert. Between a good company cookhouse and local German food and bier, I gained forty pounds in 8 weeks. Adam Burdinski our little Polish tailor was mighty po'd. Sure wish I could drop those 40 and then some in 8 weeks now. Yeah Bob, the SOS was great and for every meal you could take all you wanted, but God help you if you didn't clean your plate. Army coffee: fellow in my platoon used to say, "I don't know why you guys complain about the coffee, if you don't want it with breakfast you can always put it in your pocket and chew it later." Back to CIRCUS.
