On Thursday, May 31, 1928, John Robinson rolled into Bangor, Maine, late, and in a storm. They blew the matinee and struggled to present the night show. Mabel suffered among her worst attacks, when 2 tigers, Zoo and Shiek tore into her after she slipped in the mud. Terrell Jacobs came in, fought the tigers off, and held them back as Robert Thornton dragged Mabel out. Dr. Harrison Robinson repaired what he could of Mabel's damage over 4 hours of surgery. Six weeks later, she rejoined the show in Columbus, Ohio, and worked the act the balance of the season. Years later, Parley Baer assembled all the guests needed for Mabel's episode of THIS IS YOUR LIFE, for NBC radio, which aired on April 6, 1950. Among those Parley brought in were Mary Rutherford, who had been Mabel's devoted nurse in Bangor. Read more details of this attack in Bill Johnston's article, "A Life of Bites, Bruises, Brushes with Death", in the March-April 1989 issue of White Tops.
