Long live The Lion King, Captain Terrell Monroe Jacobs. It should be remembered his heroics were not confined to training great acts. He was the first responder twice for devaastating attacks on Mabel Stark--first, on John Robinson Circus, on May 31, 1928, in Bangor, Maine, when Mabel was torn apart by two male tigers, Zoo and Sheik. He baled her out again on the Barnes show, in Phoenix, on September 23, 1935, when Mabel's ball cat, Nellie, launched a committed attack. Jacobs unhesitatingly fought her off, with Mabel left barely alive. Mabel and film actor Charles Bickford shared headlines during their long recoveries. Bickford was taken down by a lion on the set of EAST OF JAVA, during filming at Universal.
