"Slats" Gay's Lion Farm

El Monte California

Slats resided there for a time. He did not originate there. We had MGM logo lions all through the years at the Old Place, which was Goebel's Lion Farm, Goebel's Wild Animals, World Jungle Compount, and in my day, Jungleland. All the lions had names given by their trainers, but this never mattered to the studio. For MGM, the name was Leo, period. Study MGM's website for this history. They not only name the lions who were Leos, but even how many times they roared looking left, and how many looking right--which lions were used for specific reasons for black-and-white films, and which were used for color. They include the latter-day use of the stylized artwork of a lion, seen for years in all MGM logos for film and music.
