When John Ringling cut the steel arena for three seasons, 1925 to 1928, he refused to let Mabel Stark out of her contract to pursue other tiger work elsewhere. She fumed over those "Three damned wasted years", but soldiered on, good trouper that she was. Mr. John assigned her horse acts, and her albums contain many photos of her performing the "rear-and-lay-back" we see Jean Allen working here. Another star exponent of this graceful feature was Dorothy Herbert.

In my day it was called "The Waltz & Rare." I later road "Lady Dawn" that Gene Allen rode. But by that time Lady Dawn was too old to do anything except manage. No more waltz. I felt very honored to just be able to ride her. I rode her on Diano Circus & on "Tiger Bill's Wild West Show."..........Barbara............
