This is the February 2,1924 fire at Bridgeport. There had been two earlier fires at this same winter quarters. A large fire took out most of the main building on Nov.24 1887 and then a smaller fire on January 19, 1900. p.j.
Mabel Stark was over there when this fire occurred. Her famous black jaguar was severely burned. She was a graduate nurse from Saints Mary and Elizabeth's Hospital, in Louisville, Kentucky, and using her training, she tried valiantly to nurse the animal. All her best efforts could do was keep him sedated and comfortable until his death. Forty years later, Mabel still got tears in her eyes when telling of the fire, for which there are authoritative accounts in the fan magazines.
