Surin, in N.E. Thailand. Started as the elephant festival in 1960. It has grown each year.
Wild elephants can still be seen in some national parks. There is a blacktop road through one park. Elephants don't take kindly to slow, gawking tourist on this road. Last year a long dark snake shot out across the road in front of my car to its doom. There are signs in Thai and English saying, Caution, cobra area.
