The "giant" was Hassan Ali - he joined the Barnum & Bailey show in 1898 during its European tour.

Prior to that, for a while at least, he had been doing almost street corner performances in UK for pennies. He seems to have replaced Miaco at Olympia during the show's 1897-98 season [Miaco certainly started with the show but seems to have gone before the show's first season ended - his return to US by ship was not obvious, however, he may have gone to Europe and then to US - European records at that time did not easily identify passengers whereas US/UK shipping records did].
