Reminds me of a non-stop party in our stateroom on the jump from LA to Oakland in 1978.
An occasional stop to cart off the dead and wounded!
This is a very interesting photo.
The railroad must have figured the weight of the load and seeing an engine in the middle of the train means they needed more traction power to either get up the mountains or coming down the grades.
And there could be two engines up front also.
Bill Antes shot some color Kodachrome footage of the Beatty 1946 train going though the Canadian rockies with a triple header one engine in the front, one in the middle and a pusher in the rear and what scenery to look at.
