Once the up-and-down chute was assembled and hung, there were 6 sections required to reach the track. Another last section swung off to one side to clear the track for foot traffic, and swung back to be tied to the arena for running the cats in. On one side, there was a plain rectangular section. One the opposite side, we stood up the piece that was hinged to the frame that made the tunnel's top. This roof piece had to be held bare-handed atop the single piece, so the grommets corresponded for driving down the long irons. As we see, a man had to climb up to swing the hammer. With him walking around up there, the whole affair became unwieldy, the grip often slipped, and the sections became knuckle-busters. Once assembled, it worked great as a tunnel. Making it a tunnel was a son-of-a-bitch. And I haven't begun to talk about loading those slick sections, stacked above the arena, on a cold, rainy night.

Let's hear it from Roger about the joys this iron monster brought the crew.
