No helmet for the team pictures.
They were the leather kind kind you knotted under your chin.
Has that been your excuse
all these years pal
Those were the days.
I think "86" is the term used
by waitresses in diners when
they are out of something
Better than "Deep 6".
I learned that term in the Coast Guard
We were told that the origin was from
riverboat deck hands that would call
out the water's depth from weighted
lines measured in fathoms & 1 fathom
(or 6 feet) was the minimum safe depth
for many of the flat bottom riverboats
They would call out "By The Deep Six"
So of course in salty sailor lingo
it means anything (or anyone) thrown
overboard (or just thrown out)
On that subject, my wife just Deep 6'ed the Tampa Tribune after over a half century relationship.
Just as well, rates went way up and not worth the energy of walking down the driveway to pick it up.
Likewise my wife & I Deep Sixed the daily
delivery of our local damn Sarasota paper
We now just get it on Sundays mostly for
the circulars & coupons (& not many of them)
The Sarasota Herald Tribune had been a very
well run family owned paper until bought
out by The New York Times some years back
Then it wasn't awful until a fairly recent
purchase by some larry outfit that doesn't
have a clue (or where to look for 1)
I'm sorry to say I now get most news online
BBC CNN & several major papers are easy
Certainly you are aware that several major newspapers have stopped printed versions and only use online editions in today's world.
Bob
Have I mentioned lately just how
much I preferred yesterday's world
Not that anyone's still checking these posts, but our only daily- the Nashville Tennessean, which used to win journalism awards, SUCKS. I do the puzzles and read the obits. Have a good delivery man who puts it on the porch. Otherwise I'm outta here.
