I'm probably wrong. But could the man in this picture be Paul Fritz, who followed Oscar Konyot as Ringling's lion trainer in the mid-50s? Konyot himself went on to become a chimp trainer and appeared as such with Ringling years later.

I think you're correct. The act was called the Del Monte Chimpanzees.
