Freddie once told me that like the Baggage horses, some of the elephants wore their harnesses in the cars enroute so they could pull a few wagons off the flats before continuing on to the lot.

Were some of them just used for work
& maybe in the menagerie or did they
all parade the track during the show
Probably the the good workers did everything and the dead heads stood on the picket line.
