Victor Julian #1 (From Eric Beheim)

The following images are frame enlargements from one of Victor Julian’s appearances on the Ed Sullivan show; probably a Christmas broadcast from the 1950s.
Minus the special music and the doggies’ wardrobe, Victor Julian’s act (and a similar one presented by Gerald Soules using miniature poodles) was quite basic compared to the dog act presented by the Stephenson Family. Seen from the upper reaches of a large venue like Cleveland’s Public Auditorium, the little dogs appeared as tiny specs. Even so, this act was extremely popular and played all the major Shrine and Grotto dates for years and years. (The music was always a lot of fun to play.) An act like this would be perfect for today’s 1-ring circuses. Is anyone presenting something like it today?

Someone might have better history than I about the longevity of the Victor Julian act. It was said that Gerry Soules eventuated into this act, taking over from Julian's mentorship. Soules upheld the quality of wardrobe and presentation, and found continued success with the dogs, including long runs in Las Vegas, long beyond his days on the heel-and-toe trapeze.
