From Chris Berry #3

Chicago's Lake Front lot, probably in 1940, as the Big Top was made of blue canvas that season. Note the air conditioning wagons - a new feature in 1940 - in the background. Any idea which display featured this elephant and his "trunks?"

Wonderful photos! The two images with elephants are definitely from 1940. The elephants are in wardrobe for the Marco Polo spec designed and fabricated by Max Weldy's studio.

The Tibbals Collection at The Ringling Circus Museum includes some of Weldy's sketches for this production. The link below goes to a sketch of this specific elephant blanket (without the trunks although a different sketch does show them). It is interesting to see how much detail was lost in fabrication. I am also interested in the difference in colors - the final creations were clearly much less vibrant than the sketches.

According to Steve Flint, this was the wardrobe that was used for the opening spec in 1940, "The Return of Marco Polo." -Chris Berry

Jennifer thanks for the link to the Ringling Circus Museum drawings for this spec. The colors are spectacular, and the drawings of the parade in progress are particularly interesting. I hope to get to see them up close someday, as the parade images are pretty small online, but still fascinating.
