And the hype about Maria was a composite, also. Sam Gumpertz was outraged that Clyde Beatty left Ringling titles, because of disputes with himself, and vowed to bury Beatty's name with publicity on the Mad Monk's daughter. The Gump told the world if Beatty would work 40 cats, his star Maria would work 70, by cracky. Except that when it got down to the task itself, Maria couldn't work animals. Bert Nelson told me she had the will, but in spite of the help he and the veteran animal men gave her, alas, she had no sign of ability, and the campaign to bank on the Rasputin name was soon abandoned.

was the daughter of the Russian

mystical healer Grigori Rasputin

She was born March 26th 1898 and

she died September 27th 1977
