Louie Reed was a "God Like" figure to runaway kids like Rex and Smokey.
They both told me stories from the Dailey Show about his domination, on Sundays he would say, "You two stay on the lot! You're going to learn how to splice ropes and cables, it'll come in handy some day and don't be bringing them Janes' around the elephants any more!

You remember Rex renamed that Sabu elephant of Kokomo Coughlin's "Reed."
Wasn't "Reed" the elephant
with the stiff leg & limped
kinda like mimicking Rex
After my season at Lion Country, in Grand Prairie, Texas, in '76, Rex was there one year. When I visited him, the office was giving him hell for Reed's very noticeable limp. Rex explained the condition as arthritis, and that he was keeping Reed to care for him when otherwise he'd be abandoned. The yokels, all of whom I remember, were common townies and didn't get it about attachment to animals. It didn't matter about why Rex had Reed, they wanted the elephant gone. The booking did not come to a happy end.
I do believe Smokey broke Kokomo's elephant Sabu, Then he was sold to Paul Kelly then to Rex and became Reed. Rex then bought another male from Paul who became Reed #2. I have the punk Sabu's (AKA Reed #1 ) Tub,spindle and plank.
