Clockwise from Clyde Beatty, stands Mel Koontz, Frank Phillips, John C. "Chubby" Guilfoyle, World Jungle Compound co-owner Billy Richards, Harriett Beatty, and child actress Jane Withers. At center is the Enchantress of Leopards, Olga Celeste. Of these, only Miss Withers carries on, vibrant and active at 89. The photo was taken at the Compound, in Thousand Oaks. Richards and Horne began their 10-year re-titled operation of the Goebel Lion Farm in 1946, which helps to approximate the date of this shot.
What a remarkable picture this and the one above are. After the Buckles, Rex, John Herriott picture a couple of my favorites. What year did Chubby lose his right arm, Roger? Although I never knew any of these men, and only heard of them through Lou Regan's jackpots, I will be eternally grateful to have been a part of this thing of ours.
Thanks Roger, the man who really knows this stuff. Next time I'll carefully read the question and see who was wearing a white shirt - and would had quietly passed and waited for a question on the St. Louis Zoo.
Chubby Guilfoyle lost his right arm during a lion fight, which broke out in performance on the Sparks show, up in Syracuse, New York, in 1928. That same year, Mabel Stark was torn asunder by the tigers Zoo and Sheik, on John Robinson, in Bangor, Maine. As we know, both survived, and worked another 40 years. Both died in 1968--Mabel in April, in Thousand Oaks, California, and Guilfoyle in August, in Brownsville, Texas.
Indeed, this photo is a classic. What I'd give for a print. I'm hoping to make contact with Jane Withers for her memories, and maybe an autograph. To appreciate and respect her career, read her bio at IMDb.

I can't think of who that is in the white shirt next to Chubby- a little help here?
I've only seen him in a few photos but could it be Mel Koontz, best known for his movie lion work.
