Does anyone know how much the band members made a week, and what else they had to do on a circus, besides playing in the band?

In '64, my great friend was Thomas Xavier Napoli, 1st trumpet under Boom-Boom, on the Beatty show. He told me the union rules protected them from any duty they did not want to perform. I recall the band guys showing up and playing the shows, period. One or two might help Boom situate the bandstand, but they had no Chinese. It was a little different with the butchers. If they wanted to work concessions, they had to help on seats, and/or help George Werner rag out the Big Top twice a day. If they didn't, they either didn't butcher the next show, or the next day, according to the penalty assessed by the Front End.

I was playing with Carson and Barnes #2 (later Circus Genoa) under Charlie Stevenson 1978-79. At that time we were told the Beatty band was making $350 a week, which sounded like gold to us.
