This and the following images are frame
enlargements from some 16mm movie footage that I shot back in 1972, showing the
John Strong Circus setting up in a San Diego shopping center
parking lot located not far from Mesa College. (If there was ever was a circus
that qualified for the title The Smallest Show on
Earth, the John Strong Circus was it!) Many of the local circus fans turned out to
“play circus” by helping with the setup.
Don Covington and I were both on active duty in the Navy at that
time. I just happened to be home on
liberty that weekend. If Don was in
town, then he was probably there too.

Like you and Don, I first met Big John while on active duty in the Air Force in California. He became a good friend and later we would get together when he brought his magic and Christmas stage shows to Omaha. A good guy who deservedly earned the title of "the man with more friends than Santa Claus."
