Originally Concello came up with the idea of a black top surface with a path of dirt just inside the ring curb for the horses to run on with hopes of eliminating prop hands to set up a stage. I told him it would be miserable for the elephants to have to work on such a severe surface repeatedly and Tommy Hanneford pointed out the the danger of falling on the black top's sharp edge, so we were reluctantly awarded a nice, smooth dirt ring.
