Elephant Ballet #1 (From Eric Beheim)

According to John Ringling North, the inspiration for the famous Elephant Ballet number from the 1942 Edition of the Ringling-Barnum Circus was an act that he had seen in Europe.

I always assumed that the elephant ballet was largely inspired by the “Dance of the Hours” segment from Walt Disney’s FANTASIA, which features elephants, hippos and ostriches in its “Corps de ballet.” That film opened in NYC on November 30, 1940 and played there all through 1941. JRN, John Murray Anderson, Norman Bel Geddes, and George Balanchine might have seen it and would certainly have been aware of it at the time they were planning the 1942 edition. Music from “Dance of the Hours” was part of the elephant ballet’s score (in addition to the quirky music written by Igor Stravinsky.)
