My First Elephants #1

Having always been a candy butcher I never paid much attention to elephants but after my folks got an elephant act and I was hired as truck driver I paid more attention and even helped Freddy Logan the winter he broke five in Hugo.
My first experience came during the time we were on the Polack Show and Louie Stern bought three, "Stella" in 1965 our first year, "Kenya" in 1967 and "Louie" in 1968.
This is a picture of "Stella" who I named after the wife of the show's concession boss Stella Howell.

I would love to see a composite

timeline of which years you had

the many different elephants to

include the overlaps but just

the ones that belonged to you

Stella is also Mimi Zerbini's

birth name as well as her aunt's

who was married to Jean Bervoux

Just a footnote about Candy Butchers: I heard these terms several times over the years about Butchers (And I was always in Concessions for many years)...
Butchers: "The Backbone of the Circus" and.. Butchers: "The necessary Evil of Circusdom".
Many Butchers I knew went on to be Performers and Managers. I won't mention who because sometimes they seem to hide their former beginnings as if shamed by it.
