Here
is a photo of the GREAT GRETONAS - and when comparing to the litho - it looks
like a pretty accurate reproduction of what circusgoers saw on Cole Bros in the
late 1930s!

Which group had sailor hats 1st
The Wallendas were wearing the sailor suits on Ringling before the Gretonas were on Al G. Barnes - but the idea of a "sailor on a tight rope" goes back to at least 1900 or so. I have a European lithograph in my collection (which I will post next week) from that er. It which shows a "sailor" doing an "tight rope" act on what appears to be the ropes of a tall masted ship.
Reminds me of when we rigged the
trapeze on "The Star Of India"
outboard yardarm over the water
in San Diego bay for the filming
of Elvin Bale's exciting routine
for the Imax movie for CW
Chic
I wonder what happened to the Imax film from Circus World?
BTW there is a circus world reunion March 7 in Orlando. Are you going?
I didn't have as much fun there
as many of you & what I remember
best was the horendous traffic
including "Malfunction Junction"
between I-75 & I-4 going between
Sarasota & Haines City all too
many times (so maybe not)
I did however enjoy being part
of the emergency disaster relief
team including Tuffy Don Foote
Mel Cabral Hal Ronk & others
sent up by Irvin after Mattel
realized their foolishness &
asked for his help (too late)
I've wondered about that film
many times myself Larry
Somewhere I have a length of
a few feet of that 70mm print
that runs horizontally
I also have a file of a survey
of the elements in the "Circus
Day Theater" & related expenses
that never saw the light of day
I was asked to prepare that by
someone VERY high up the in the
Feld food chain to be used in a
battle to regain control of the
park that never came to be
I believe first bike might be Franzel or Eugene, Willie on the bottom and Clara top mounter and Otto on the back bike
