You can see the push pole menagerie in the background the first one since 1950, they had been quartered in the front round end of the big top for the past four seasons. I also noticed they were building what looked to be a Pit Show nearby and Smokey explained they were sending two small elephants ("Cass" and "Adele") ahead of the show to be used for publicity, reducing the herd to an even fifty. Closing day of the season "Barnes Jewel" who brought up the rear of the herd was struck by an automobile Dec. 2 at St. Petersburg, Fl. and died the following closing day at Tampa. So the show completed the Fifty Elephant Tour with 49. Also missing was Smokey (seen at left) who had departed in California and his assistant Benny White brought the herd home.
